Currently Reading: Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 3.0

With a down economy and millions of people unemployed and underemployed, setting oneself apart professionally has never been more important. Not only do multi-national corporations have brands these days, individuals do as well. From carefully crafted (or not) online social personas to posting professional credentials on LinkedIn, whether you have cultivated one with a great sense of awareness, you have a brand. If you are looking to strengthen your brand and increase your job prospects, check out what we are currently reading after the jump.

Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 3.0

Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 3.0 focuses on strategies and tactics for jobseekers that are looking for a new job, whether they are looking to re-enter the workforce, switch industries or are open to new opportunities. Some of the ideas listed such as the “Coffee Cup Caper” definitely qualify as guerrilla marketing. This tactic involves overnighting empty coffee cups with quick introductions to hiring managers and decision makers as a way to get attention and time on a calendar. Very novel and interesting stuff. For a little context, guerrilla marketing is “a way of getting more for your marketing dollar than any other way…It’s using unconventional ways to gain conventional goals” per James Conrad Levinson, the man who coined the term and one of the authors of this book. However, a lot of the book also focuses on establishing your personal brand. Simply executing a “T-Exercise” (drawing a line down the center of a piece of paper and on one side listing job requirements and on the other the experience you have that solve the company’s needs) can help a jobseeker identify how their qualifications fit a job opening and how to position themselves properly to get the position.

Overall, this book is chock full of insights that can help one truly evaluate their experience and expertise while offering some tactics that will surely throw any exec off-kilter just enough to be truly intrigued by one’s efforts.
